From looking after a 16-year-old Jack Russell to working with animals on safari, I’ve learned that good animal care comes down to one thing: paying attention.

I’ve had my Jack Russell for 16 years, so I know that caring for a dog isn’t just about walks and feeding times. It’s about noticing the little things — when they’re not quite themselves, what makes them comfortable, how much exercise they actually need, and when they simply want some company.

That experience was complemented by six months working as a safari guide in South Africa. Working around wildlife every day and working with a trained aint-poaching dog (Luma) taught me to be observant, calm and respectful of animals, while also dealing with very different personalities and situations. Although looking after a family dog is obviously very different from working on safari, the same principle applies: understand the animal in front of you rather than treating every animal the same way.

When I look after your pet, my aim is to keep their normal routine as much as possible. I’m happy to handle walks, feeding, playtime, companionship and any specific routines you have established. For house sitting, I’ll also treat your home with the same care and respect I would expect someone to show my own.

I’m comfortable with dogs of different sizes, ages and energy levels, including older dogs who need a slower pace and plenty of patience. I’m also happy to discuss particular requirements before a booking, whether that means an energetic dog who needs lots of exercise or a nervous dog who needs a little more time to settle.

Most importantly, I want your dog to feel that you’ve gone away for a while — not that their whole world has changed. I’ll keep you updated with messages and photos, follow their routine, and make sure they get plenty of attention while you’re away.
